Find YOUR motivation!

Why do we do what we do- work, eat, sleep, talk, exercise, listen, shop…? For every decision that we make and every action that we take, there is an underlying cause. In exercise science, extrinsic and intrinsic motivational factors seem to play the biggest role in our adherence to healthy behaviors. Extrinsic means external or outside of yourself. This type of motivation is everywhere and frequently used. When you are motivated to behave, achieve, learn or do based on a highly regarded outcome (weight loss, trophies, money, grades, recognition, etc.) you are being extrinsically motivated. Intrinsic means internal or inside of yourself. When you are intrinsically motivated, you enjoy an activity, course or skill development solely for the satisfaction of learning and having fun, and you are determined to strive inwardly in order to be competent. For many people, healthy living starts with extrinsic motivation- doctor says you’re pre-diabetic, you feel criticized for your weight, you want to win 1st place, you want to look “good” for a big event. These are respectable reasons to begin making positive health behavior changes. However, people who have intrinsic motivation tend to adhere to healthy behaviors longer and ENJOY the health-seeking journey. Ultimately, having many different sources of motivation will help us make healthy living a priority for ourselves and those we love the most.

Fit Tip & Challenge

One of the best ways to build intrinsic motivation is to EJNOY what you are doing. Find ways to have fun while you exercise, buy and prepare healthy meals, and spend time with others. Over time, you will begin to look forward to these healthy activities. This week, identify your top 3 reasons for living a healthy lifestyle. Do you currently have extrinsic motivation? When you fulfill that purpose, will you still be motivated to make healthy living a priority?
